Task force seizes suspected counterfeit clothing, shoes

More than $40,000 worth of suspected counterfeit clothing and sneakers from Swagga was stuffed into black bags Tuesday and loaded into a crime scene van by members of the Shreveport-Caddo Financial Crimes Task Force.

Owner Billeco Brewster, 37, was burning bootleg DVDs when task force members walked into the small business in the 1700 block of Kings Highway in Shreveport, Caddo sheriff’s Detective Bobby Herring said. Brewster was issued an order to cease and desist selling counterfeit items, Herring said.

Timothy Allen, owner of Candi Shoppe II, stood outside his clothing store watching familiar-looking task force members file in and out of Swagga, on the opposite end of the strip shopping center.

In August, those task members were in Allen’s store seizing his merchandise. The task force busted eight small businesses that month, making for the second-largest Nike bust ever in the United States, Herring said.

Swagga’s business sign is emblazoned with logos advertising that it sells Chanel, Coach, Dolce & Gabbana, Ed Hardy, Gucci, Hello Kitty, Hi Hater, Louis Vuitton, Nike and Prada.

The black bags taken out of Swagga were filled with Ed Hardy shirts, pants and sweatsuits, Ralph Lauren Polo shirts, 115 pairs of Nike shoes and about 800 motion picture DVDs. The items were determined to be fakes by a single representative hired by the respective companies, Herring said.

“I don’t know of any store like this authorized to sell Nike shoes,” Herring said.

“Especially not $120 shoes for $30,” Shreveport police Cpl. Jeff Gilmour, a task force member, chimed in.

Allen said task force members came to his Candi Shoppe II as he was unloading a large order of Nike shoes while they were on the premises Tuesday. No items were taken.

“We straight,” Allen said of his store and its Nike, Baby Phat and Ralph Lauren Polo merchandise, which he said he now buys from a distributor who is licensed.

“That’s one of the problems we had last time – they believed they were selling good stuff,” Gilmour said. “Eventually, after you come back three and four times, they’ll get more than a slap on the wrist.”

The businesses’ compliance with cease-and-desist orders are taken into account but does not prevent them from being sued by the legitimate manufacturers or prosecuted, according to Gilmour. Even having merchandise that lacks a company’s logo but mimics its trademarked features, like the pattern on Coach purses, opens a company to be prosecuted on the federal offense of trademark infringement.

Of the eight stores busted in August, two still are selling counterfeit items and are among eight the task force intends to target next, Herring said. “If they’re going to sell counterfeit items, we’re going to continue investigating them.”

Shoppers came out, but did they buy?

Throngs of shoppers flooded area stores early Friday, in a post-Thanksgiving Day rush for holiday bargains.

Black Friday
At Prime Outlets Ellenton, thousands jammed the discount mall around midnight on Black Friday — the day retailers typically turn a profit for the year — for savings and specials.

The mall’s Coach designer leather store, which offered 20 percent off coupons and other specials, had a line more than 100 yards deep. Customers waited for more than an hour just for the chance to enter.

Lines also greeted shoppers at several other stores, including J. Crew. Starbucks appeared to do a brisk business, as well.

“We just can’t not come,” said Sheri Slowey, of Brandon, who traveled to Ellenton with her daughter and two friends. “There are some really good bargains here that we had to have.”

Slowey and her group stopped at Bath & Body Works, Learning Express, Guess and other stores.

At 11:30 p.m., northbound traffic off Interstate 75 to the mall was backed up for more than a mile at the bridge over the Manatee River — a much grander reception than merchants faced at midnight last year.

Two hours later, the backup had grown, as cars snaked along connecting roads, the highway exit and the interstate.

But it was unclear at Ellenton and throughout Southwest Florida whether Black Friday shoppers who interrupted sleep and braved the relative cold were, in fact, Black Friday buyers. Most walked about sans shopping bags, and appeared content to meander in a crowd and be part of a party atmosphere.

Even at electronics retailer Best Buy Co., which had more than 500 on hand for its 5 a.m. opening in Sarasota, the majority of customers left without big ticket items such as televisions, computers or other more expensive gadgets.

At the Macy’s in Westfield Southgate Mall, only a smattering of customers took the bait of early morning specials when the department store opened at 5 a.m. The store’s bright lights stood in contrast to the rest of the mall, not slated to open for another three hours.

At Westfield’s Sarasota Square Mall, J.C. Penney fielded a steady stream of customers following a 4 a.m. opening, though most appeared to be making smaller, incremental Christmas purchases.

“I’m not buying many big-ticket items this year,” said Sarasotan Vicky Elliott, as she left J.C. Penney. “The clothes they have are being offered for pretty good prices, but there just aren’t a lot of the bigger things we feel we need, and we’re trying to cut back some on purchases this year.”

Last year, 500 patrons crowded Penney’s parking lot for a 4 a.m. opening. On Friday, only about 100 were present when the doors swung open, though the store had a constant churn of buyers who snapped up Sunbeam toasters, towels and clothing at discounted prices.

Bob Parker, the store’s manager, said the majority of Black Friday sales would come in the early morning hours — corresponding to sales that typically last into early afternoon. J.C. Penney’s doorbuster specials expired at 1 p.m.

“Eighty percent of our volume today will be done by 1 p.m.,” Parker said Friday, shortly after the store opened. “Generally, in Florida, we’ve found the home department starts off strongest, followed by jewelry and then apparel.”

Retail experts say Black Friday, typically a bellwether of the holiday shopping season, is even more important this year. In 2008, merchants suffered their worst holiday sales in decades, prompting a wave of bankruptcies and store closures.

Many retail analysts say that without a strong 2009 season, many more stores will go dark in 2010.

But even overcoming anemic 2008 sales will not be easy. Though nationally the economy appears to be sputtering toward recovery after the longest downturn since the Great Depression, unemployment and underemployment remain high, real estate foreclosures are still common and consumer credit has been slashed by weary lenders.

Several retail observers — from American Express to consulting firm BDO Seidman — predict holiday sales will either be flat or down this year.

The Conference Board, a nonprofit business group, estimates that the average Florida family will spend $346 this year on Christmas or other holiday purchases.

Several shoppers surveyed at Ellenton and elsewhere said they planned to spend as much or less on the holidays as in 2008.

The pursuit of bargains seemed to drive both shoppers and retailers.

“Especially if you’re buying kids’ stuff, clothing and alike, it’s pretty cheap, fairly inexpensive,” said Clearwater’s Michelle Smith, who traveled to Ellenton and shopped at Children’s Place and elsewhere with her sister, Patricia, for deals.

The duo planned to do at least half of their overall holiday shopping on Black Friday, and spend roughly the same amount as in 2008.

Retailers acknowledged the lingering recession by offering gimmicks, promotions and specials designed to capture elusive consumer dollars.

In addition to discounts and sales — Ellenton’s Brooks Brothers’ outlet boasted “40 percent off entire selection” — some retailers made direct appeals to consumer sentiment.

“The economic rebound starts here!” a sign in the window of Ellenton’s Oakley Vault blared.

What could make a difference — experts believe and retail groups hope — is a return to self-gifting.

Sarasota’s Tim Kiszak took advantage of self-enforced savings and specials at Best Buy to buy himself a new flat screen television and a Sony surround-sound system. On the latter, he saved more than $200, he said.

“I missed out last year, so I saved up,” Kiszak said. “Last year, and part of this year, was pretty rough, but I’ve just started working again, and I’m on top of my bills right now, so I decided to do it.”

He plans to buy gifts for family and friends closer to Christmas.

For now, retailers are looking for more customers like Kiszak and the Sloweys and their friends, who said they had already spent more on holiday shopping in 2009 than last year.

And they weren’t done: After leaving Ellenton, the foursome planned to proceed to a mall, around 8 a.m.

Or was it a real roll around with ripped shirts fight?

Looking at the headlines yesterday it was a case of not quite believing what I was reading.

Now usually it`s a case of not wanting to believe what I was reading, especially if it`s heavily laden with doom.

But there it was, written in black and white, Salomon Kalou had been involved in a fight, a training ground brawl or fisticuffs – call it what you want.

Now whenever I`ve seen Salomon, either on the pitch or being interviewed by the media, he`s come across as one of the mildest mannered players I`ve seen, in fact I`ve often believed that a little bit of the devil in his play is what`s required to improve him as a footballer, a little controlled aggression mind you.

Unfortunately, details about the ‘bundle` are a little sketchy with both parties, Salomon Kalou and Abdoulaye Meite, keen to express their regrets at what happened and move on.

First up, Kalou is quoted as remarking,

“Meite is like a brother to me and I am sorry for what happened.”

“We have talked about the incident and I have apologized to him.”

“It`s a pity it happened and it`s important to take responsibility for your mistakes and learn from them. We were punished by the coach and now we must move on.”

Whereas Meite has commented,

The Bangz’ Sabi Discusses Bandmate’s Post-Shooting Recovery

Rapper Janice “Sabi” Portlock of Los Angeles rap group the Bangz suffered a shock when she was informed that her partner, Korttney “Ella” Elliot had been shot in the neck by a stray bullet on Sept. 14.

“I honestly didn’t think it was that bad,” Sabi told MTV on the set of the Bangz’s new video, ‘Found My Swag,’ in L.A. “Ella parties a lot, so I was thinking, ‘Maybe she was out and about.’ She caught a stray bullet. I didn’t think it was gonna be as serious as it was.”

The group had a song ‘Boys With Tattoos (We Jerkin),’ making noise at the time, which DJ Felli Fel had in heavy rotation on L.A.’s Power 106. Then, “the world stopped,” Sabi said.

“When we got to the hospital, I remember walking through the emergency room,” she continued. “I didn’t know what to expect. When I saw the face of her stepfather and her mother, I knew it was something very serious. I immediately started crying. I said, ‘Please tell me she’s not … ‘ I thought the worst happened. They thought the worst happened. [The doctors] said she was practically brain-dead basically. Then they found some brain activity and it was a little shine of light. It was a roller coaster situation. Then they got her somewhat stabilized, but she was in such a critical condition. It was a really awkward, stressful, shocking situation. The whole world just stopped.”

Ella had three surgeries and was unconscious for close to a month, but has since made a huge recovery. Though she can’t yet speak or walk, she is responsive, and is able to perform basic motor functions.

“She’s doing good,” Sabi said. “The fight is in her to get better. She’s such a rock ‘n’ roll chick. This is not gonna slow her down at all. She’s been getting physical therapy, speech therapy to get her back to where she was. The doctors say they expect a full recovery as long as she fights to get better. She has to push through these therapy sessions because it’s really hard for her. When she got injured, she was unconscious for three weeks. Now she’s fighting to get her mobility back. As soon as she opened her eyes three weeks later, she was aware.”

Coach Shares Slide As Department Stores Sound Caution

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)–Coach Inc.’s (COH) shares slid Tuesday, making the company one of the biggest decliners in the S&P 500, a move analysts attributed to concerns about department stores’ inventories and the luxury customer.

Earlier Tuesday, Saks Inc. (SKS) swung to a surprise fiscal third-quarter profit on cost-containment, though Chief Executive Stephen Sadove said Saks remains cautious about the environment. Meanwhile, Dillard’s Inc. (DDS) Chief Executive William Dillard said even with a substantial inventory decline at the end of the fiscal third quarter, the company thinks it is well-positioned to meet holiday demand.

Coach gets about 14% of its revenue from indirect channels such as sales in department stores like Saks, Macy’s Inc. (M) and Dillard’s, among others. Shares were recently off 5.3% to $34.08. The stock is up 64% so far this year and is off a fraction of a percent in the last month.

Upscale leather-goods retailer Coach has been cutting handbag prices in an attempt to drive results and to help sales of other items such as wallets and shoes, as sales of luxury brands have dropped amid the broad slide in consumer spending. Coach has been trying to undertake the effort without sacrificing margins by working with suppliers.

Wall Street Strategies analyst Brian Sozzi said he thinks the stock was declining as the department-store results show the stores still aren’t investing in inventory.

“Everything we’re hearing is department stores are going to maintain lean inventory” to try to keep margins up, he said, adding there’s very little visibility into next year.

A Coach spokesperson couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Needham & Co.’s Christine Chen said there continue to be concerns about the luxury customer. Saks said business seems to be better, and less promotional, she said, but Saks didn’t say the luxury customer was out of the woods yet, which could be weighing on luxury stocks.

Chen said she thinks Saks was being appropriately cautious, adding that the luxury customer was the last to fall, and she thinks those customers will lead the recovery now that the market is bouncing back, and they have a little more job certainty and have regained some certainty in their retirement plans.

Chen said she likes the fact many of the department stores aren’t boosting inventory, since stores were over-inventoried last holiday season, hurting all the brands.

Stores not boosting inventories means companies like Coach will be able to sell products at their first price or first markdown, and they won’t have to mark items down 70% or 80% before Thanksgiving like they did last year.

Chen added that she thinks Coach is well-positioned for the holiday season with its products and price points.

New Bills’ coach to debut Sunday

Buffalo Bills interim head coach Perry Fewell looks on during NFL football practice in Orchard Park, N.Y., Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2009. Fewell takes over after Dick Jauron was fired as head coach on Tuesday.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Perry Fewell never had an inkling his long-imagined opportunity of a lifetime would come this season.

“No,” the Buffalo Bills’ newly appointed interim coach recalled of that July day. “I never envisioned it.”

Not this season, not in Buffalo, and especially not with the way things unfolded Tuesday, when the Bills defensive coordinator was promoted after his good friend Dick Jauron was abruptly fired in what could be the start of a major shakeup by team owner Ralph Wilson.

The sudden turn of events came as a shock to Fewell, who’s never been a head coach at any level since serving as a graduate assistant at North Carolina in 1985.

But that doesn’t mean the 47- year-old feels unprepared as he makes his debut Sunday, when the Bills (3-6) play at Jacksonville (5-4).

Cowboys bring out the black jerseys

After years of speculation and petition, some OSU fans finally got what they wanted Thursday night.

The Cowboys revealed black uniforms for the first time since 1994.
Senior linebacker Andre Sexton said the jerseys were part of a specialized line of jerseys for only a small number of the nation’s top teams at the beginning of the year.

“Twelve teams in the country got these new uniforms to wear,” Sexton said. “I think that just shows how much we have accomplished as seniors to get the program totally turned and nationally recognized like that.”

He said few players actually knew about the jerseys ahead of time.

“Pretty much no more than 10 people on the team knew about it,” Sexton said. “So it was a big surprise for the team.”

Senior cornerback Perrish Cox said he was happy to see all the speculation finally come true on his senior night.

“We’ve been talking about black jerseys since I’ve been here,” he said. “Everybody always spreads rumors.

Coach Gundy came and told us that we earned them, and I kind of agree with him.”

Response to the jerseys was not only positive from those on the field but also in the student section.

Accounting senior Shannon Lavicky said the special Nike jerseys marked a monumental moment after the program’s turnaround over the past four years.

“I loved them,” Lavicky said. “They look so classic. When you see the NFL jerseys and you are like, ‘Oh, they are taking it back classic,’ – that’s how it was tonight.”
